How to Play 18 Words
Rules, timer mechanics, and strategies for getting a high score in the daily 18 Words challenge.
What Is 18 Words?
18 Words is a daily word challenge where you unscramble 18 words against a countdown timer. Each word has its letters shuffled — your goal is to tap (or type) the letters back into the correct order before the clock runs out. Every word you solve counts toward your final score out of 18.
Basic Rules
- Each round shows you one scrambled word. The letters are displayed as tappable tiles on screen in a random order.
- Tap the letters in the correct order. Select each letter in the sequence that spells the target word. On desktop, you can also just type with your keyboard.
- You have 30 seconds per word. A countdown timer is shown above the word. Solve the word before it hits zero.
- Unused time carries over. If you solve a word with 18 seconds remaining, those 18 seconds are added to your timer for the next word.
- If time runs out, the word is revealed. The correct answer is shown briefly and you move on. That word does not count toward your score.
- Complete all 18 words. After the last word, your result screen shows your score, your percentile ranking, and a shareable emoji grid.
The Timer in Detail
The 30-second timer is the core mechanic that separates 18 Words from standard word-unscramble games. Here is exactly how it works:
- Every word starts with 30 seconds maximum (the timer never goes above 30).
- When you solve a word, the remaining time is added to the next word's timer — but capped at 30 seconds.
- Fast solves bank time. Slow solves drain it.
- When the timer hits zero, the word is counted as missed and the next word begins immediately.
This means the challenge rewards speed. If you solve the first few short words quickly, you give yourself extra runway for the longer or harder words that come later.
How Scoring Works
Your score is the number of words you solved out of 18. Simple as that. After the game ends, the result screen shows:
- Your final score (e.g. "You scored 14 of 18 words")
- Your percentile ranking compared to other players that day
- An emoji grid showing which words you solved (🟩) and which you missed (🟥)
Score all 18 and you're in the top 1% for the day. Score 15 or more and you're in the top 5%.
Strategies for a Higher Score
1. Attack short words fast
3- and 4-letter words are usually much easier to unscramble at a glance. Solve them in under 5 seconds and you bank big time buffers for the harder words. The timer mechanic makes early speed very valuable.
2. Look for common letter patterns
When you see a scrambled word, scan for common endings (-ing, -tion, -ed, -er) and common beginnings (un-, re-, pre-). Identifying a likely suffix or prefix immediately narrows down the word.
3. Use the keyboard on desktop
Typing is faster than clicking. On desktop, start typing the word as soon as you recognize it — the game automatically highlights the correct letters as you type. Use Backspace to undo the last letter if you make a mistake.
4. Don't overthink long words
For long scrambled words, try reading the jumbled letters as a string and let your brain pattern-match naturally. Often the whole word clicks instantly. If it doesn't, start placing likely letters at the front or back while you think.
5. Reset your selection if you're stuck
Tap the word display area to clear your current selection and start over. Don't waste time trying to remove individual wrong letters — just tap to reset and try again.
