About 18 Words

A fast daily word challenge. 18 scrambled words. 30 seconds each. One puzzle per day.

What Is 18 Words?

18 Words is a daily word game that started with a simple question: what if a word game was actually fast? Not "type the word in five guesses" slow. Actually fast — a ticking timer, scrambled letters, your fingers against the clock.

The result is a game that takes about three minutes to play and leaves you wanting to immediately try again. You get 18 scrambled words per day. Unscramble each one before the 30-second timer runs out. Unused time carries over to the next word. Your score is how many of the 18 you survive.

The Design Philosophy

The game is built around a few core ideas:

  • Speed matters. The timer is central, not an afterthought. Solving fast is rewarded; hesitating costs you.
  • One puzzle per day. The daily format creates a shared experience. Everyone plays the same puzzle. You can compare results honestly.
  • No accounts, no friction. Open the site and the game is already there. No signup, no tutorial, no loading screen. Tap and go.
  • Results you can share. The emoji grid at the end gives you something concrete to post. Green squares for solved words, red for missed ones — a clean visual summary in one screenshot.

How the Timer Works

The 30-second-per-word timer carries over any unused time to the next word. This is the mechanic that makes 18 Words feel different from a typical word scramble. Solve the short words fast and you build a time buffer. Use that buffer on the longer, harder words. Get stuck on a 7-letter word and you might bleed into your next round's time.

It creates a rhythm where the game is as much about time management as vocabulary. Two players with the same vocabulary score might have very different experiences depending on which words they nailed and which ones stalled them.

The Archive

Every past daily puzzle is available in the archive. Each puzzle is playable once — the same one-attempt rule that applies to the current day's challenge applies to archive puzzles too. This keeps the score meaningful even for older puzzles.
